Buchannan Residence
Shepherd, Texas

Our client wanted a simple 1,400 square foot house on piers that he could build for himself on his eight acre wooded site. With a design to minimize the heating and cooling requirements for the residence and with a specific reference to the traditional “dog trot,” the house is cut into two areas under a sloping, standing seam roof that reflects sunlight. On one side is private space, a master bedroom and bath. On the other side is public space, a kitchen, a living room and a dining room. A raised timber deck runs partially around the house’s exterior and through the “dog trot” to connect the house to the surrounding landscape. Its exterior south wall is designed to open during warm summer months to capture cooling breezes and to be completely closed with large sliding barn doors hung from overhead tracks during inclement or cold weather. Portions of the public space can be divided with movable walls when needed to create sleeping areas for guests.
