Lowry Residence
St. Louis, Missouri

The house was sited at the edge of some woods to the north and toward an expansive view of a small lake and valley to the south. A long brick wall running through the house along its east-west axis and projecting on both of its ends organizes public and private spaces. Family and utility rooms on the uphill wooded side are separated from the major rooms and public spaces on the south side. Energy use is minimized by large windows that cross ventilate spaces and by protective wooden sun screens on the south. Utility poles march across the entire south elevation of the house to emphasize its eight foot planning module and to support the wooden sun screen.
